Language does not come naturally to machines. Unlike humans, computers cannot easily distinguish between, say, a river bank and a savings bank. Satire and jokes? Algorithms have great trouble with that. Irony? Wordplay? Cultural context? Forget it.

5 Ways the 21st Century Makes Learning Spanish Easier

In the world we live in, there are countless ways to further your language education; many of these are even free. Are you the type to break your vow to learn a new language? You no longer have an excuse. Today, I'm counting down 5 ways that the 21st century makes learning Spanish easier.

Twitter is a great place to pick up typical conversational dialogue. If you don't already have a Twitter profile, now is a great time to sign up. A quick search for hashtag #LearnSpanish will yield tons of links as well as simple phrases that will advance your learning. If you like one of the links, make sure to retweet it to save it to your twitter feed for future reference.

Another tip for the search engine is to pick a common English word, translate it into Spanish, and type it into the search bar. For example, I searched for the word "day" in Spanish (día) and yielded tons of Twitter users that are tweeeting in Spanish. Once you find a user whose posts interest you, start following them and begin chatting.

Tip: Make sure you hit the "all" option to get all the results rather than the top tweets. And you can do this with any language, for example French (jour) and German (tag).




YouTube is one of the best places to get free Spanish instruction from a real person. There are also videos specifically designed to help you learn vocabulary or improve your listening skills through music. Check out some of my favorites

·         SpanishIsYourAmigo: (http://www.youtube.com/spanishisyouramigo) Of course, I have to include my personal channel. Each of my Spanish lessons is under 5 minutes. The videos will take you step-by-step from beginners to advanced Spanish.
·         Happy Hour Spanish: (http://www.youtube.com/happyhrspanish) This is one of my new favorite channels. These videos take you on an immersion trip throughout Spain without ever leaving your house. They are made by two girls, one from Spain and one from California.
·         AskPaulino: (http://www.youtube.com/askpaulino) Paulino's short Spanish videos are completely in Spanish. His viewer-submitted questions are particularly helpful for new learners as he answers them very slowly and carefully.
·         SpanishWithRocio: (http://www.youtube.com/spanishwithrocio) Need to boost your vocabulary? These videos feature pictures along with the words to help you lock in the information.
·         GagaYohon100: (http://www.youtube.com/gagayohon100) If you love watching music videos from artists like Carly Rae Jepsen and Lana Del Rey, check out this channel. All the featured videos are subtitled in Spanish so that you can read along.
·         SpanishSessions: (http://www.youtube.com/spanishsessions) These videos come straight from Madrid and most of them are set in a typical classroom. They're heavy on grammar and great if you want to learn the vosotros form.
·         TontitoFrito: (http://www.youtube.com/tontitofrito) Señor Jordan posts new Spanish videos every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. His videos vary from phrases of the day to typical Spanish lessons.
·         LanguageNow: (http://www.youtube.com/languagenow) If you want to know everything about Spanish grammar, check Professor Jason's videos out. He features Portuguese lessons as well.

3. Skype & Google Hangouts

For some reason, many people aren't attracted to the idea of taking language classes via video chat. But it truly can't be beat. What's not to love? It's easy, accessible, and cost-effective, and no doubt your listening and speaking skills will significantly improve. You can either find a language exchange partner or hire a professional Spanish tutor. LiveMocha (http://www.livemocha.com) , Fiverr (http://www.fiverr.com) , and even Craigslist (http://www.craigslist.com) are great places to find affordable Spanish tutors.

4. Forums

Forums are a great way to improve your grammar, find language partners, ask questions, chat about culture, and more. Some of the best are:

·         Spanishdict: (http://www.spanishdict.com) This site is user-friendly and widely used, so you'll get tons of responses to your most pressing grammar conundrums. Spanishdict also has a great translator tool, verb conjugator, and dictionary.
·         Tomisimo: (http://www.tomisimo.org) This is another great forum. Their home page boasts that they are in the business of "helping you speak like a native." I agree.
·         Reddit: (http://www.reddit.com/r/spanish) Reddit features a great community of Spanish speakers and learners sharing links and answering questions.
·         Wordreference: (http://www.wordreference.com) This site not only features forums in over 15 languages including Spanish, it also features verb conjugators and dictionaries.

5. Helpful Sites

Here are some of the most helpful sites to further your learning:

·         Photo Vocab: (http://www.Zachary-jones.com/photovocab) Photo Vocab is "a Spanish vocabulary builder that presents a Spanish word-of-the-day picked from the captions of the day’s most striking photography."
·         Professor Jehle: (http://users.ipfw.edu/jehle/) Professor Jehle's site is one of the best I've found for Spanish grammar lessons. It's a must-see for any student.
·         Meetup:  (http://www.meetup.com) Type "Spanish" in the search bar to find meetup groups designed to practice Spanish with people in your city.
·         StumbleUpon: (http://www.stumbleupon.com) If you like keeping up with the latest Spanish blog posts and links, sign up for a StumbleUpon account. It automatically refreshes websites that feature content that you're interested in seeing.
·         Yahoo Answers: (http://www.answers.yahoo.com) If you need a Spanish question answered fast, ask the yahoo answers members. Within seconds of posting, often you'll have multiple answers to your question.
·         Pinterest: (http://www.pinterest.com) At the moment, Pinterest isn't very search-friendly, but have no doubt that it will soon become a place to find some of the best Spanish links around. Sign up for an account and start pinning your favorite links.

News: Google’s Project Glass Could Make Learning Another Language Unnecessary



Will Powell, the Oxford developer who created his own pair of Google Glasses, is at it again. This time he has implemented real-time translation into the glasses that displays what the person next to you is speaking in real time via text. While Powell’s technology uses Microsoft Translate, it’s not much of a stretch to think Google would use their own translation software in Project Glass.

EFL/ESL: Monster Description Activity






This is an activity that was done during the teaching of body parts and expanding descriptive vocabulary.

For this activity, the teachers were each given a blank sheet of paper and a body part written on a note card. The note cards were turned upside down on their desks. When it was time to begin, the first teacher to go read her body part out loud to the class, and everybody drew his/her version of the body part on the blank sheet of paper. This continued until there were no more body parts to be read.

It doesn't matter which body parts are used or how many; for example, two of the teachers had a note card on which "head" had been written.



After all the body parts were read, the teachers came to the front of the class and put their drawings on the overhead for everyone to see. Teachers were called upon to describe the monsters, using the new vocabularies that they had learned. This was also an opportunity to teach more new vocabulary words, such as "squiggly" to describe a curly tail.

Día de la Independencia de México (Independence Day in Mexico)



Hello everyone! Claudia Sadowski here to share with you that every September, my students have the assignment to do a research and a presentation about anything related to Mexico’s Independence Day. Surprisingly enough and to my students’ dismay, they find out that September 16th is truly the “real” date Mexico celebrates their independence from Spain.  Mistakenly enough a large group of people assume that Mexico’s Independence Day in on May 5th, based on the well known and overly represented phrase: “Cinco de Mayo”.
In order to make better justice to the description of this day, please go to the following website that has concise information about the history of the Independence in Mexico:


Due to the fact that the dates are exactly the same or a few days before or after, I also assign my students to do a research about the independence of various countries in Central and South America. This activity helps us to become better acquainted with the vast history of other countries where the Spanish language is also spoken and they also have in common the independence from Spain.

Furthermore, my students usually present an informative power point that portrays basic facts about the country. For example, they share a picture of the flag of their assigned country, their national anthem, etc. They share pictures of the actual currency being used; they also share fun facts about the country, and tell us about famous people in the world from that specific country. Students then narrow their presentation to the celebration of Independence Day. After, students share pictures of specific items that have to do with the celebration.  For example, some countries have clothing items that they use to celebrate Independence Day. Some countries even have specific food that goes hand-in-hand with the celebration. Other important part of their presentation is the fact that students instruct their classmates on how to do some arts and crafts related to the topic. Lastly, what is a Hispanic celebration without at least one dance? For this part, students include videos in their presentations showing how people from those countries celebrate this holiday. Many videos include famous dances in addition to parades and fireworks.    

I leave you with a video of the famous “Grito de Dolores” that the President of Mexico proclaims every Independence Day from the Government Palace located in Mexico City. This “Grito” is a reenactment of what Father Miguel Hidalgo proclaimed the actual day of Independence. A Sample Dictogloss Lesson

I posted about the idea of using a Draw and Tell to differentiate a dictogloss the other day using a draw and tell story to review transition words the other day I did it and it worked out really well.

  • With my rowdy class I started by putting a text on the board. It said 
 READ THESE DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY 
I will not be taking attendance right away. Please sit down and take out a piece of paper and a pen. When you are quiet, I will tell you a story. You should should NOT write down anything. Just listen to the story. I will begin when you are quiet. 
  •  That worked better than it could have. They were quiet and ready within 5 minutes ( I was pleasantly shocked). Then I told them the story.  There was a boy. He was young. He was three years old. He went on a walk. He was attacked by bees. He was scared. He ran away. They followed him. He jumped into a lake. He stayed there until the sun set. The bees went away. He went home. I was eating eggs and bacon. I was happy to see my dog. 
NOTE: This story, though brief, is actually pretty hard since it is purposely bland! SO keep it simple.

  • I told students to work on their own and try to recreate the story to be as close to the original as possible. They had 2 minutes. A few of them freaked out, but I let them know they would hear the story again. and they weren't expected to get it perfect.
  • After two minutes I told them the story again. This time I drew the dog that goes with it. I told them they had one more minute. Most students did NOT look at the board; however, I noticed some students looking up and using the picture to help them.
  • When the minute was done I told them to partner up and they spent the next 5 minutes working with someone else to recreate the text.
  • Finally students swapped their answers with another partner and I showed them the original text. They made corrections and the team with the least mistakes got bonus points.
  • I asked the students what was wrong with this text. THANKFULLY (as we had been studying transition words) they told me it was missing transition words.
  • Now, with their partner, had to re-write the text to include AT LEAST
    • 1 relative clause
    • 1 cause and effect transition word
    • 1 sequencing transition word
    • 1 contrast transition word
    • 1 addition transition word
    • (When students finished early I added other categories to get them to add too)
  • Finally we shared all the different ways the sentences could be combined.
This worked really well as a review of transition words, and we practiced general listening, reading and writing skills that would be on the exam. Even though the use of draw and tells is normally reserved for younger groups I think in this case it was a useful add on to help some students with the dictogloss.

EFL: Vocabulary Brainstorming & Description




The teachers formed two teams, and each team was given 5 minutes to generate as many vocabulary words as they possibly could for a given category; for example, insects or animals.



The chalkboard was divided into two sections, and the teams had 5 minutes to write as many words as possible on their side of the board.



Then, after the 5 minutes were over, they were instructed to close their dictionaries and notebooks. The teachers were asked to draw the animals on the board, and each team received a point for a vocabulary word that a team member could describe or drawn, and a point was taken away for a vocabulary word that could not be described or drawn. The pictures drawn by the teachers facilitated their verbal descriptions, unaided by their dictionaries.
